The City Council recognized the winners of Republic Services' annual poster contest for K-8 students in Citrus Heights.
CITRUS HEIGHTS, CA (MPG) - At the Citrus Heights City Council meeting on February 13, the Council recognized the winners of the annual poster contest held by Republic Services, the residential garbage and recycling services provider for Citrus Heights. Republic Services hosts the contest each year in partnership with the San Juan Unified School District (SJUSD) and Citrus Heights schools, teachers, and students.
The contest is for students living in Citrus Heights or for SJUSD students in Citrus Heights schools. Students are eligible to participate in the contest in kindergarten through 8th grade.
This year’s poster prompt was “Know Before You Throw.” The theme encouraged students to think about the importance of knowing what items can be recycled and which are trash. By knowing the proper bins for discarded items, students can do their part to keep our environment clean.
The Citrus Heights City Council and City staff members helped select the winners. The winning artwork is featured in a 2020 calendar that was mailed to all Citrus Heights’ residents.
The winners received a certificate award and a $25 gift card. The grand prize winner — Sophia Hammon, a 5th grade student from Woodside K-8 school — was awarded a $50 gift card.
Participating schools were Grand Oaks Elementary, Carriage Elementary, Mariposa Elementary, Woodside K-8, Kingswood K-8, Lichen K-8, and Sylvan Middle School. Sylvan Middle School had the highest level of student participation and received a $500 gift card.
