Memorial Day "" All Gave Some; Some Gave All

May 13, 2020 12:00AM ● By Sylvan Cemetery District

CITRUS HEIGHTS, CA (MPG) - Memorial Day will be celebrated on May 25, this year.   Memorial Day, not to be confused with Veterans Day, is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.  Veterans Day on the other hand celebrates the service of all U. S. Military veterans.  Memorial Day, formerly known as Decoration Day, originated after the American Civil War in 1868 to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. The end of May seemed to be appropriate since many spring flowers are available.  By the 20th century Memorial Day had been extended to honor All Americans who have died in all wars in the past 245 years.

Every year, Sylvan Cemetery in Citrus Heights honors those that gave their lives in the defense of their country.  We take time to salute the over 3 million men and women that have died in military service defending our country since 1775.

This year, the Memorial Day service is being planned to be held on Monday, May 25, 2020, at 11:00 am at Sylvan Cemetery, 7401 Auburn Blvd., Citrus Heights.

We are planning on going forward with our Memorial Day ceremony at Sylvan Cemetery. We are not planning on doing the march through the cemetery and only doing about 30 - 40 minutes in the gazebo.  The Harmony Express will not be in attendance and the CHPD will not be required for an honor guard.

Folding chairs will be provided for those who want to sit but there will be no mandatory seating arrangements. We would love to have you here but if you are concerned about your health and do not want to attend–we understand. We are hoping that there will not be a problem with having a ceremony since according to the latest we will be off of our stay in place restrictions on Friday, May 22.
