CITRUS HEIGHTS, CA (MPG) - Did you know the City of Citrus Heights encompasses a total of 14.4 square miles and 25 percent of the land area is covered in tree canopy? This tree canopy helps create what is called an “urban forest,” and provides economic and social benefits to the community in several ways:

(1) Large, healthy trees increase property values; Trees contribute to the attractiveness and livability of Citrus Heights; (2) Trees can save energy costs by shading houses and decreasing heat absorption during the summer and blocking and redirecting wind flow during the winter; (3) Trees provide food and protection for many types of wildlife; (4) Trees fight the atmospheric greenhouse effect by absorbing carbon dioxide and capturing pollution in leaves.

To promote the well-being of trees, the City of Citrus Heights provides property owners free access to an arborist, a professional in the practice of arboriculture. The arborist can provide education and recommendations on tree preservation, including planting and maintenance, with the overall objective of enhancing and protecting the City’s urban forest.

The program is funded by the mitigation fees collected when protected trees are removed. The City’s Planning Division administers the Tree Assistance Program and Tree Permits.

If you have questions about tree preservation, including how to obtain a free consultation with an arborist or about when a tree permit is required, contact the Planning Division at (916) 727-4740.
