Scholarship Partnership Recognizes 2022 Student Winners
CITRUS HEIGHTS, CA (MPG) – The April 28th Citrus Heights City Council took time in its agenda to recognize and award three SJUSD graduating seniors, who are Citrus Heights residents, with the Republic Services 2022 Sustainability Scholarships.
The $1000 scholarships for each student are made possible due to a partnership between Republic Services, the City of Citrus Heights, and the San Juan Education Foundation promoting the STARS-Science, Technology, Arts, and Reading for Students in the school district.
According to Colleen Cadwallader, Executive Director for the San Juan Education Foundation, this is the work the foundation has since 1991 been advancing for excellence in “education for all San Juan Unified students.”
Cadwallader explained the program’s aims: “One of the ways we do that is through a broad scholarship portfolio and we are thrilled to partner with the City of Citrus Heights and with Republic Services to honor and celebrate some seniors who are going on to continue their education and more importantly to champion sustainability.”
Speaking at council on behalf of Republic Services, Ray Robinson, Jr., the new Municipal Administrator, said in the company’s Outreach and Education Highlights of the 2021 Annual Report that these three recipients fulfilled the requirements of residency, written an essay, and “are interested in pursuing a degree in sustainability or a degree that will benefit the environment.”
These three graduating seniors were awarded at the City Council:
Aubrie Moore, the graduating Valedictorian of her class at Mesa Verde High School, Citrus Heights. She plans to attend Sierra Community College; Mike Maslianka, a graduate of Del Campo High School in Fair Oaks, who is to attend UC Davis. He is a first-generation college student in a family of immigrants from Ukraine; and, Danielle Pickens, also a graduate of Del Campo High School in Fair Oaks, who plans to attend William Jessup University. She is currently writing a book and hoping to publish a second one as well.
Congratulations to these winners!
