1 man killed, another wounded in Citrus Heights apartment shootout

CITRUS HEIGHTS, CA (MPG) – A Citrus Heights man is dead and another is seriously wounded following a shootout in the late hours of May 23 at an apartment complex in Citrus Heights.

According to the Citrus Heights Police Department, several 911 calls were made around 10:55 p.m. on Monday, May 23, reporting fired gunshots in the 6000 block of Birdcage Street at Farmgate Way, west of Sunrise Boulevard and south of Greenback Lane.

A 20-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds was found in the walkway of the apartment complex when officers arrived on the scene, according to a CHPD news release. The wounded man, whose name has not been released, was rushed by ambulance to a local medical facility in critical condition.

A second 20-year-old man was found dead at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds inside a nearby apartment, according to the CHPD. On May 25, the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office identified the name of the man who died in the shootout as Jacob Steven Lopez of Citrus Heights.

Investigators believe the shooting wasn’t random and that the two men who were shot likely knew each other. According to the CHPD, preliminary information revealed both men appeared to be shooting at one another. The 6000 block of Birdcage Street was closed for several hours overnight as investigators evaluated the crime scene.
