Traffic Collision Results in Critical Injuries to Cyclist

CITRUS HEIGHTS, CA (MPG) - On July 22, 2022, at approximately 5:00 PM, the Citrus Heights Police Department (CHPD) received 911 calls regarding a traffic collision between a vehicle and a bicyclist on Sunrise Blvd. north of Antelope Rd.

Upon arrival, officers located an adult male bicyclist on the ground, unconscious and suffering from injuries. The driver of the involved vehicle was at the scene and cooperative. Sacramento Metro Fire Department responded and transported the seriously injured bicyclist to an area hospital, where his status remains critical.

Due to the severity of the injuries to the cyclist, the CHPD Traffic Unit responded to the location to initiate a collision investigation; the investigation is ongoing. The cause of the collision is not yet determined, and alcohol/drug involvement is not yet known. 

A section of Sunrise Blvd. was closed during the investigation for approximately three hours; however, it is now reopened. 

CHPD would like to remind all motorists to drive safely and share the road with bicyclists. We also caution bicyclists to use designated bike lanes and cross streets in designated crosswalks.
