CITRUS HEIGHTS, CA (MPG) - An estimated crowd of 400 gathered under the shady trees outside the front of the Sylvan Oaks library branch of the Sacramento Public Library on 6700 Auburn Blvd. to beat the heat and enjoy a refreshing cold cup of Leatherby’s ice cream.

The crowd members were at the first of three “City Scoop” ice cream social events that are sponsored by the city of Citrus Heights.

The popular second annual “City Scoop” series, held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, continues at Metropolitan Fire Station 27 at 7474 Grand Oaks Blvd on July 11 and wraps up at the Lichen K-8 public school on 8319 Lichen Drive on Thursday, Aug. 8.

Families and community leaders mingled on the grounds of the Sylvan Oaks library to connect, as they shared ways to chip in to help their community in their neighborhood.

“City Scoop is back to celebrate community in our neighborhoods,” said Marisa Brown, the city’s communications officer in between taking turns with City Manager Ash Feeney and city Economic Development and Community Engagement director Meghan Huber to hand out individual serving cups of ice cream to those waiting in line.

Portable seating was plentiful for those needing it, as younger children played games on the library’s front lawn.

In 2023, the inaugural City Scoop summer series featured ice cream socials throughout the summer at various locations in Citrus Heights, including Greenback Greenspace, Sylvan Community Center and Westwood Park.

The opening June ice cream social featured multiple booths where the public could learn about city programs and services that include the rental of its community block party trailer and how to join and learn more about the specific neighborhood association in their area of the city.

Citrus Heights is divided into 11 neighborhoods with nine neighborhood organizations representing each area, with areas 7, 8, and 9 being combined. If you’re not sure what neighborhood you’re in, visit online https://www.citrusheights.net/450/Neighborhood-Areas.

Representatives from the Citrus Heights Police Athletic League (PAL) described youth law enforcement programs and staff from Sacramento Public Library, which hosted the event, provided helpful information about available summer reading programs for younger residents.

In addition to helping children choose from a carousel of sweet toppings to add to their cups of ice cream, staff from the Sunrise Recreation and Parks District also answered questions about summer classes now enrolling and provided copies of the district’s summer recreation guide.
