SACRAMENTO REGION, CA (MPG) - San Juan Unified School District hosted its Winter Art Showcase at the Sacramento Fine Arts Center, celebrating the creativity and talent of students across the district. Running from Dec. 1 through Dec. 13, the exhibit featured artwork from students in transitional kindergarten through 12th grade, highlighting a diverse range of artistic styles, mediums and expression.

Since 2013, the Winter Art Showcase has provided students with an opportunity to share their work with the community. Art teachers select pieces for the exhibit based on craftsmanship, creativity and artistic vision. This year, 24 schools participated, with approximately 260 student pieces in the showcase.

The exhibit featured an array of mediums, including colored pencil, oil pastel, watercolor, acrylic paint, paper collage, ceramics and glass art, celebrating the unique perspectives and skills of young artists at every grade level.

The showcase concluded with a special artist reception on Dec. 13, attended by families, teachers and community members. The reception also featured a choir performance by students from Twin Lakes Elementary School, adding a musical element to the celebration.

Xyla and Alani, first and second-grade students at Kingswood K-8, said they were happy to have their families in attendance at the artist reception. They also shared why they love art.

“I love art because I can create anything I want to,” Xyla said.

“I love art because I want to be an artist just like Ms. Rios,” Alani added, referencing her art teacher.

For teachers, the showcase offers a rewarding opportunity to see students’ excitement firsthand. Jennifer Wolfe, elementary art lead and art specialist at Del Dayo Elementary School, shared what the experience means to her.

“I have participated in this show as an elementary art teacher for the last 10 years. This is my fourth year coordinating the event. I love seeing the smiling faces of students as they walk around the gallery looking for their art. When they find it, their eyes light up. Their families are so excited and proud.”

For many students, the showcase reinforces the importance of art as a form of self-expression. Laila, an 11th grader at Mira Loma High School, shared what art means to her.

“Creativity. It’s because it is something that we need. It’s color, it’s expression,” Laila said. “You get to express yourself. You get to flow. You get to naturally be who you are, express your feelings and emotions, put that into art and create stories. It’s important.”

The Winter Art Showcase reflects the district’s commitment to arts education. By offering opportunities for students to showcase their work, San Juan Unified continues to nurture creativity, talent and a lifelong appreciation for the arts.
