CITRUS HEIGHTS, CA (MPG) - The city of Citrus Heights is inviting the public to see plans for the next phase of the Arcade-Cripple Creek Trail which will extend the trail from the Stock Ranch Nature Preserve on Thursday, June 4th from 5:30 to 7 pm at the Sylvan Community Center, 7521 Community Drive.

The half-mile multi-use trail, known as the Arcade-Cripple Creek Trail – Sylvan to Stock Extension, which aims to improve walkability, safety, and access for pedestrians and cyclists, is the next phase in the city’s vision for a connected citywide trail network eventually linking residential areas to key destinations such as retail centers, schools, public spaces, community centers and open spaces.

The city of Citrus Heights awarded the trail design contract to Dokken Engineering of Folsom. The project is currently in the early stages of planning, environmental surveys and design, with a tentative completion date anticipated by December 2026.

The awarded contract for preliminary engineering, right of way and final design is not to exceed $1.175 million and was funded through a federal Carbon Reduction Program Grant, Brown said.

“Bidding and awarding of the actual construction contract for the Arcade-Cripple Creek Trail – Sylvan to Stock Extension is subject to future grant funding,” said Marisa Brown, city communications officer.

The Citrus Heights Arcade Cripple Creek Trail - Sylvan to Stock Ranch Extension is primarily funded by a Federally Funded Carbon Reduction Program (CRP) grant, administered by Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG), Brown said.

Key physical features proposed include a 10-foot-wide paved multi-use trail, signalized Sylvan Road crossing creek crossings, and a trail crossing which will extend the existing Stock Ranch Trail to Sylvan Road, according to the city.

At the upcoming public meeting, community members will view recent environmental technical studies which have been completed and provide input on a draft environmental document now being prepared by the city.

Users of the trail can currently walk or ride from Arcade Creek Park Preserve all the way to the northeastern outskirts of the city at Wachtel Way, near the Roseville border.

In coming years, two new extensions are planned for the existing Arcade Cripple Creek trail, including a half-mile extension along Mariposa Avenue and another half-mile extension from Sylvan Road to Stock Ranch Plaza, according to Citrus Heights General Services Director Regina Cave who announced the two trail projects in early May.

In 2022, the city received Active Transportation Program (ATP) grant funding for the design, environmental documentation, and construction of the Mariposa Extension Project.

When completed, the future Mariposa Avenue extension of the Arcade Cripple Creek Trail will connect Sayonara Drive, where the trail currently ends, to Mariposa Avenue, following Arcade Creek, according to the city.

Along with a paved multi-use trail, the extension project will include the addition of Rectangular Rapid-Flashing Beacon (RRFP) crossing and related accessibility improvements at trail connection on Sayonara Drive, pathway lighting, bridges across creek crossings, drainage improvements and landscaping.

Though often calculated at only 2.9 miles, the total trail length is over four miles when counting the third-of-a-mile existing trail in Arcade Creek Park Preserve and the three-quarter-mile trail through Mitchell Village, both of which connect to the newly constructed 2.9-mile trail.

In May 2024, the city of Citrus Heights officially opened the first segment of the Arcade Cripple Creek multi-use trail located between Sunrise Boulevard (near Arcade Creek Park Preserve) and Wachtel Way.
