CITRUS HEIGHTS, CA (MPG) - The Goodyear Auto Service store at the corner of Greenback Lane and Arcadia Drive, in business for over 20 years in Sunrise Mall closed to customers on Tuesday, June 30.

The sudden closure, a decision made by its corporate parent, Goodyear Tire and Auto, according to local store management who wished not to be identified, is allegedly connected to the service center being unexpectedly cut off from the main electrical service grid line which was provided from multiple transformers located in the former Macy’s store.

Approximately seven store employees, including front counter service representatives and auto service mechanics, were given a week’s notice of the store’s pending closure.

In early June, Goodyear store management found they were without primary electrical power to open the store.

Further investigation revealed the source of the sudden power loss was the outage of the primary electrical transmission service line which was provided from the former Macy’s retail store.

The Citrus Heights Goodyear Auto Service store was closed for a day in early June while a portable generator was delivered and set up to provide temporary electrical power to its four-bay service center and its general heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC) needs servicing its front customer service counter computer equipment, store management said.

According to store management, vandals allegedly stripped copper from the main electrical transmission lines which provided power to the auto center. An incident report was said to have been filed with the Citrus Heights Police Department (CHPD) by local Goodyear store management soon after the discoverer of the power outage.

Marisa Brown, city communications officer for the city of Citrus Heights, responding on behalf of the CHPD said no such incident was reported to CHPD during the months of April, May or June involving significant copper theft or vandalism of the power transmission line at the former Goodyear Auto Service store at Sunrise Mall.

By Friday, July 3, the blue Goodyear brand lettering and all signage had been fully stripped from the store exterior walls.

Remaining store personnel were seen filling a commercial dumpster with surplus equipment for disposition. Window signage also thanked customers for their loyalty and support and referred them to stores in Rocklin and Shingle Springs for their future service needs.

The history of Citrus Heights Goodyear Auto Service Center store in Citrus Heights traces back to the original Weinstock’s Department Store which opened in Sunrise Mall in 1972.

Weinstock’s operated its own auto service center in the very same location at the intersection of Greenback Lane and Arcadia Drive until its closure in 1995.

Goodyear Auto Service then re-opened the store as a corporate location and continued to operate its Citrus Heights location while under lease, all while continuing to be serviced by the main electrical grid from the former Macy’s.

Weinstock’s, originally Weinstock, Lubin & Co., was founded in Sacramento in 1874 and was a regional favorite across California, Nevada and Utah and was an anchor store in Sunrise Mall when it opened in 1972.

In 1995, all remaining California Weinstock’s stores were acquired by Federated Department Stores, and the Weinstock’s retail brand name was then formally retired.

The original R.H. Macy & Co. was also then acquired by Federated in the early 2000s. Federated rebranded hundreds of regional stores across the nation, including the former Weinstock’s at Sunrise Mall under its iconic Macy's nameplate.

The ongoing purchase of Sunrise Mall from Namdar Realty Group of Long Island, N.Y., by Tallen Capital Partners of Mill Valley is expected to be finalized in 2027, according to CEO Terry Tallen in a recent interview.

His firm is currently in escrow to purchase about 50 acres of Sunrise Mall, which is owned by the Namdar Realty Group, with plans to then sell about 14 acres to the Mettle Shop for construction of the Sunrise Sports Complex which will be built facing Greenback Lane.

Namdar currently owns the 25-acre parcel where much of the core Sunrise Mall building now stands and two 12-acre parcels home to the former Goodyear Auto Service center, and the buildings which formerly housed Macy’s Men’s and Macy’s Women’s.

Once the sale is complete, Tallen Capital Partners, LLC will assume the role of majority owner and developer for its Sunrise Mall project.

Tallen Capital Partners, LLC is also partnering with the Mettle Shop to build a state-of-the-art, 160,000-square-foot sports facility on an 11-acre anchor site where the former Goodyear Auto Service store now stands.

At its core is a 4,000-seat multi-use arena designed to host sporting events, concerts and more.

Customers who have purchased new Goodyear tires under warranty may visit other corporate Goodyear auto service locations which are still open in the communities of Rocklin and Shingle Springs for their service needs, store management said.
