CITRUS HEIGHTS, CA (MPG) - The City of Citrus Heights held a free evening workshop last Tuesday, Aug. 18 at the Sayonara Community Center on Sayonara Drive providing the public with an update on the next phase of the  Arcade-Cripple Creek Trail (ACCT), which will extend the existing trail by 0.5 miles along Arcade Creek between Sayonara Drive and Mariposa Avenue when complete.

The planned alignment of a 10-foot-wide paved multi use trail, fully funded by a Caltrans Active Transportation Program (ATP) grant would wind through open space in a residential neighborhood within the area of Lialana Way, Mell Court, Rinconada Drive and Mauana Way.

In July 2024, the city authorized $7.155 million in grant funding to construct the trail. This July the city hired an engineering consultant to support the city in delivering the public outreach, preliminary engineering and environmental approval for the project.

Two years earlier, the city received Active Transportation Program (ATP) grant funding for the design, environmental documentation and construction of the Mariposa Extension Project. Matching and leveraging funds are derived from city staff time and Measure A Bike and Pedestrian funding, according to the city.

While the new multi-use trail from Sayonara Drive to Mariposa Drive runs parallel to Arcade Creek at several points along the route, several water crossing points are being considered where Arcade Creek is located near Challis Court and Mauana Way and behind Rinconada Drive. Examples of bridges and retaining walls were shown in plan drawing illustrations. The location of some 23 individual trees marked in red along the trail route are marked for removal, presentation documents show.

The Mariposa trail extension also includes drainage improvements among its planned project elements, taking into account feedback from previous public outreach efforts, according to the city.

The overall design of the 10-foot-wide paved multi-use trail route will be finalized over the next two years with project engineering, right of way and coordination with property and utility owners taking place during that time. Construction is expected to start in 2029, according to the city.

When complete, the new trail extension will feature trail lighting, ADA-compliant curb ramps and a new marked crosswalk with a Rectangular Rapid-Flashing Beacon at Sayonara Drive, continuing the city’s long-term goal of creating a connected system of pedestrian and bicycle trails.

Altogether, the Arcade-Cripple Creek Trail extending from Sunrise Boulevard (Arcade Creek Park Preserve) to Wachtel Way near the Roseville city limit, totals more than four miles, including the existing one-third-mile segment in Arcade Creek Park Preserve and the three-quarter-mile trail through Mitchell Village, both of which connect to the 2.9-mile trail that opened in May 2024.
