CITRUS HEIGHTS, CA (MPG) - The City of Citrus Heights is hosting its annual Community Garden Day on Saturday, October 16, 2021, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the corner of Greenback Lane and Park Oaks Drive. Led by Armando Velasquez, the City’s Maintenance and Construction Inspector Supervisor, community members will have the opportunity to plant flowers and spread bark to revitalize the Parkwood Estates Greenbelt Park.

Community Garden Day is a hands-on way to meet and work alongside neighbors and volunteer City staff. If you are looking to get involved, are part of an organization that likes to volunteer, or your child needs to participate in a community service project, please contact the General Services Department at 916-727-4770 or [email protected] to sign up! There will be expert bark spreaders on site to guide volunteers, share knowledge, and answer questions. The City advises that volunteers should bring their own shovels and rakes, as supplies will be limited.

“On behalf of the Citrus Heights community at large, I would like to thank Armando for pulling together this volunteer event year-after-year,” said interim City Manager Chris Boyd. “Providing an opportunity for the community to come together in a hands-on, safe way seems more important than ever right now. Timing the City’s Community Garden Day to coincide with the Citrus Heights Community Marching Band’s Howl-O-Ween Parade and Harvest Festival fosters a special opportunity to volunteer and celebrate all in one day.”

To thank volunteers, City staff will be raffling off dozens of donated gift cards and items, as well as hosting a continental breakfast, water, and pizza for lunch. Volunteers are encouraged to continue celebrating community spirit at the Howl-O-Ween Parade and Harvest Festival, hosted by the Citrus Heights Community Marching Band, which concludes at Rusch Park.
